Get Dental Coverage With The New Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)

Dental benefits that could significantly lower dental costs for uninsured, lower income BC residents

The federal government has introduced a new Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), designed to make it easier for vulnerable Canadians to access affordable oral health care.

This program covers dental care costs for Canadians without dental benefits and with a household income under $90,000 a year.

Here’s everything you need to know:

Am I Eligible?

To qualify for CDCP, you must:

not have access to any type of dental insurance or coverage
have an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000
be a Canadian resident for tax purposes
have filed your previous years’ income tax return

What Dental Services are Covered?

To qualify for CDCP, you must:

not have access to any type of dental insurance or coverage
have an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000
endodontic services, including root canal treatments;
prosthodontic services, including complete and partial removable dentures;
periodontal services, including deep scaling;
oral surgery services, including extractions.

How Much is Covered by CDCP?

The CDCP will reimburse a percentage of the cost, based on established CDCP fees and your adjusted family net income.

Patients may be required to make a co-payment (that is, pay for a portion of their dental care under the CDCP) based on the following income thresholds:

Lower than $70,000	100% of eligible oral health care service costs will be covered at the CDCP established fees.	0% of the CDCP established fees. You may face additional charges as described below.
Between $70,000 and $79,999	60% of eligible oral health care service costs will be covered at the CDCP established fees.	40% of the CDCP established fees. You may face additional fees as described below.
Between $80,000 and $89,999	40% of eligible oral health care service costs will be covered at the CDCP established fees.	60% of the CDCP established fees. You may face additional fees as described below.

How Can I Apply For Coverage?

Applications for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is rolling out in phases.

Application schedule

Seniors aged 70 and above	Started in December 2023 and ongoing
Seniors aged 65 to 69	Starting May 2024
Adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate (T2201)	Starting June 2024
Children under the age of 18	Starting June 2024
All remaining eligible Canadian residents	May 1: 55 to 64 years old May 15: 18 to 34 years old May 29: 35 to 54 years old

NOTE: Aged 18-64 Canadians to become eligible for the CDCP will start to access care as early as June 1, 2025. The coverage start date to access oral health care will vary based on when eligible Canadians apply, when the application is received and when the enrolment is completed.

Current CDCP Member Renewal Process

From March 2025 onward, current CDCP members must take action to renew their coverage.

CDCP members must have filed their 2024 tax return and received their 2024 Notice of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency before applying for renewal at canada.ca/dental, in My Service Canada Account (MSCA) or by telephone.

CDCP members must submit their renewal applications by June 1, 2025, to ensure uninterrupted coverage. Coverage for those who do not renew will end on June 30, 2025 and any oral health care services received during a gap in coverage will not be eligible for reimbursement.

Both those seeking to renew their eligibility and those eligible to sign up to the CDCP for the first time will receive letters and reminders from the Government of Canada to support them in this process.
